Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Annals of Natural History. From scientific Latin Agamus, genus name (J. G. Agardh, 1821, in Königlich-Schwedischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Handlingar 1820, 1821) from ancient Greek ἄγαμος unmarried, not marrying.
