An acute viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever, severe aching, and catarrh, and often occurring in epidemics.

From Italian, literally ‘influence’, from medieval Latin influentia (see influence). So named because of the belief that the disease was due to the unfavorable astrological influence of the stars.
